The Salt Marsh Alliance, a not-for-profit organization, was formed in 2002 to supplement city funding for the Salt Marsh Nature Center. As residents of Marine Park and Gerritsen Beach, we believe that this educational facility, its beautiful nature trails, and its community-oriented events are valuable assets to our neighborhood.

In this era of city and state budget cuts, the Salt Marsh Alliance provides a way for private citizens and local businesses to help maintain the Nature Center in a win-win partnership with New York City's Parks and Recreation Department and the Urban Park Rangers.

The Nature Center's state-of-the-art educational exhibits and displays require ongoing care, maintenance and security. The grounds, including the one-mile loop trail, must be patrolled for the safety of visitors and nearby residents. Litter must be picked up and, unfortunately, graffiti and vandalism must be repaired. The Salt Marsh Alliance will provide items and services as needed, including supplies and labor.

The Center opened on Earth Day in April 2000. In addition to a salt marsh, its grounds include upland meadows, waterways and tidal flats. The open waters of Gerritsen Creek are an important refuge for ducks, geese and other waterfowl. This wetland ecosystem can be viewed from nearly 5 miles of shoreline.

Join our effort to maintain stewardship of our creek and wetlands. This is your opportunity to do something truly beneficial to your community. The Salt Marsh Alliance needs you.

Greetings from the Salt Marsh Nature Center!

My how July has flown!  As usual, we are busy with programs including the Junior Ranger Camp, park tours and the MPCA’s backyard series.  There’s plenty of canoeing coming up here at the Marsh, Coney Island and Prospect Park.

So far, we’ve had a lot of great programming in July.  We had the “Dino Mobile” from the Natural History Museum visit the Center, Broadway Show Tunes with Gilbert Weiss on the lawn, nature tours and crafts and so much more!

The Rangers throughout the borough are working hard, including our Seasonal Sergeants Kathy Vazquez and Stefanie Setteducato.  They both have been an asset to Brooklyn taking care of the Fellowship Rangers and Junior Ranger Camp.  It’s really been one of the best summers we’ve had.

August will also bring us more great programming.   The MPCA Backyard Series on Thursdays will continue through August 21st. All programs will start at 11 a.m.  Musician  Joe Ardigo will entertain the crowd on the 24th on the lawn, and August’s (28th) Lawn Chair Theatre will feature National Treasure.  Also, something new, an Urban Park Ranger Eco-Challenge on the 16th.  You can register a team of 2 or 3 people where you’ll compete in a cross-country run, an orienteering course and a canoe race.  Call the Nature Center on August 4th to register. (718-421-2021)

If you get a chance please come and check out the SMA’s annual Art Show on August 23th and 24th.  Volunteer Ellen Hoyt has already been working hard on bringing this together and it's a great way to see art work created by local talent.  Thank you Ellen!

A big thank you to all our volunteers for their help with programming:  David and Jessica Schulman, Bob Kaplan, Jack Hoyt, Gail Sullivan, Joanne Rivezzo and Bernie and Jessica Cohen.  And, a big thank you to all others I may not have mentioned.  We are grateful for your support.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Best to you,

Kristy Di Cario
